The Three
Pillars.
"A nation-state is defined by its distinct civilization, continuous self-governance, and official diplomatic relations. Tibet possessed all three."
Distinct Civilization
Tibet evolved an entirely unique civilization — the Uchen script, Tibetan Buddhism, administrative systems, and Himalayan architecture — developing independently of Sinitic culture over millennia.
Unbroken Self-Rule
For centuries, Tibet ruled its own territories under the Ganden Phodrang government and the Dalai Lamas — operating its own courts, army, postal service, currency (Srang), and independent tax system.
International Treaties
Tibet engaged in treaty-making with neighboring empires — the Sino-Tibetan Treaty of 821 AD, the Simla Accord of 1914, and the Nepal-Tibet Treaty of 1856. Such actions are exclusive to sovereign states.
